How to Choose the Best Spider Pest Control in Sydney?
When you are looking to protect your family and pets from spiders, you want to find a company you can trust to deliver a long lasting spider pest control treatment.
If your friends cannot recommend a spider exterminator, we recommend using our checklist below to help find a quality pest control company.
(Professional Pest Manager does not recommend or endorse any particular spider pest control company.)
Check their Licenses
Make sure the pest manager has a current pest control license issued by NSW Environment Protection Authority. They should be able to show you their license on request.
The EPA public register allows you to check the license status of your pest manager.
Ask to see their Insurance
Licenses and insurance are two separate things. A pest manager may have a license to carry out the work but they may not be insured to carry out the work. Without insurance, if anything goes wrong, you are not protected.
Make sure their insurance covers pest work. The pest control company needs to provide you with a copy of their insurance if requested.
Check out their online reviews
If you haven’t received a recommendation from a friend, checking out their online reviews is the next best thing. Our directory listings provide a link to their Google Maps listing and Reviews.
What spider pest control warranties do they offer?
Most general pest control treatments include spiders in their warranty. Often the warranty is restricted to web-building spiders (see below). Most companies will offer a 6-months, but some companies will offer a 12 month warranty.
Please note that although some companies will offer a 12-month warranty, most products will last no more than 6 months. They offer a 12-month warranty on the basis that having completed a thorough treatment, even if the treatment has completely degraded, it would be unlikely for a spider problem to re-occur within the 12-month period.
What does a warranty actually cover / mean? The pest control company warranties that the spider problem will not return within the warranty period. If spiders do re-appear, contact your pest control company. Typically they will come around to investigate and carry out spot treatments to areas of concern (if necessary). They are unlikely to carry out a full treatment. The spot treatment does not re-set the warranty period, it is simply intended to top up the treatment to make sure it lasts the original warranty period.

Specialist Spider Treatments
Sometimes you may have a specific problem or spider infestation. In such cases, the pest control company may recommend a specialist spider treatment, rather than a general pest control treatment. It will be a little more involved to carry out an inspection to find the source of the problem and may need an augmented treatment. This may mean it costs a bit more than a general pest control treatment.
Common spider species in Sydney
The most common type of spiders found in Sydney:
Web-building spiders: Redbacks and Black house spider.
Running spiders: White-tail spider, huntsman spiders, wolf spiders and funnel-webs.
Redback spiders
Redbacks are one of the most common spiders in Sydney and certainly delivers a painful bite. They build their webs in dry, sheltered spots outside and inside the home. A professional spider treatment can deliver excellent protection from redbacks.
Black house spider
The black house spider is probably the most common spider in Sydney and will build their unsightly webs around doors, window and under eaves.
Some people will confuse the black house spider with funnel-web spiders, as they are a black house spider and build funnel-shaped webs. However, the Sydney funnel-web is a ground dwelling spider.
Black house spiders are actually quite timid so don’t often bite.
White-tailed spider
White-tailed spiders are a common running spider, more common in the warmer summer months. Their favourite food is actually black house spiders.
They often come inside during summer to escape the heat and particularly like hiding in clothes and sheets on the floor – just like squeezing under bark and logs, where they normally live.
They do deliver a painful bit, but the idea that white-tailed spider bites causes flesh to decay is an urban myth.
Huntsman spiders
Huntsman spiders are quite scary due to their large size and fast movement. However, they are normally quite timid (preferred to run away) and their bite is not particularly painful. They are amongst the more difficult spiders to control due to their large size (and so they need to pick up a bigger dose of insecticide when walking over treated surfaces).
Wolf spiders
Wolf spiders are a common outdoor spider and do a lot of good work in the garden (keeping plant pests down). They really only come inside by accident and are not really considered a pest.
Funnel-web spiders
Funnel-webs are found in moist sandy soils, in forested areas. So the Northern Beaches, Hills District, and lower Blue Mountains are hotspots.
They are only really encounters when the males go wandering in Autumn looking for a mate or after heavy rain when their burrows are flooded.
It is very difficult / impossible to deliver 100% protection from funnel-webs as it is impossible to find and treat all burrows.
Spider Pest Control Prices in Sydney
Most spider problems can be dealt with as part of a general pest treatment (which includes other pests).
The price of a general pest treatment (which includes spiders) will depend on the size of the house and the size of the property. The more areas to be sprayed, the more time and product it will take and so the higher the price. Prices generally start at $250 for an average single level home with small yard, but can be $500 or more for large homes on property.
When comparing services, check to see what pests are included in the services and how long the warranty period lasts.
Homeowners can often get better value by combining their general pest treatment with their annual termite inspection for a discount.
If there is a specific spider infestation, e.g with funnel-web spiders, the pest manager will probably need to quote on site.
