How to Choose the Best Ant Pest Control in Sydney?

To get rid of ants completely, you need to find a pest control company that has expert knowledge of ant identification, behaviour and control techniques. This is because to get lasting control, ant exterminators will often use ant baits to kill the nest. To choose the right bait you need identify the species and choose the right bait and apply it correctly to eliminate the nest – you need to be an ant expert!

If your friends cannot recommend an ant exterminator, we recommend using our checklist below to help find a quality pest control company.

(Professional Pest Manager does not recommend or endorse any particular ant pest control company.)

Make sure the pest manager has a current pest control license issued by NSW Environment Protection Authority. They should be able to show you their license on request.

The EPA public register allows you to check the license status of your pest manager.

Licenses and insurance are two separate things. A pest manager may have a license to carry out the work but they may not be insured to carry out the work. Without insurance, if anything goes wrong, you are not protected.

Make sure their insurance covers pest work. The pest control company needs to provide you with a copy of their insurance if requested.

If you haven’t received a recommendation from a friend, checking out their online reviews is the next best thing. Our directory listings provide a link to their Google Maps listing and Reviews.

Most general pest control treatments don’t include ants in their warranty. Some might, but it may be a limited warranty – it may not cover all ant problems or have a reduced warranty. Most ant problems require a specialist ant treatment.

Ants inside the house

Ant problems inside the house can be cause by ants coming in from outside or from an ant nest inside the house. Typically, the ant exterminator will carry out a treatment to ensure any ant nest inside the building is eliminated and a spray around the exterior of the building to prevent ants re-entering. They will guarantee elimination of ants inside the building and provide a warranty on ants re-entering. The duration of warranty may depend on the treatment and ant species present.

Ants outdoors

Treatment of outdoor ants, for example ants in pavers, will often use a combination of sprays, insecticide granules and baits. Depending on the ant species and situation warranties will typically be 3 or 6 months. It should be understood that for outdoor ant treatments it is simply not possible to give a 100% elimination guarantee as ants can always move in from surrounding areas. In addition, some ant species build super colonies covering large areas. In such situations it is only possible to reduce ant numbers for a limited period and regular re-treatments will be necessary.

Lawn ants

There are two key pest lawn ants in Sydney – green-head ants which deliver painful and itchy stings and funnel ants which damage lawn structure and produce unsightly soil funnels on lawns. Expert ant exterminators can eliminate both types of ants and provide long term protection. However, both ants will eventually re-invade treated lawns. Green-ant treatment warranties will often by 3 0r 6 months, funnel ant warranties 6 0t 12 months.

What does a warranty actually cover / mean? The pest control company warranties that the ant problem will not return within the warranty period. If cockroaches do re-appear, contact your pest control company. Typically they will come around to investigate and carry out spot treatments to areas of concern (if necessary). They are unlikely to carry out a full treatment.  The spot treatment does not re-set the warranty period, it is simply intended to top up the treatment to make sure it lasts the original warranty period.

Common ant species in Sydney

Four of the most common types of ants found in Sydney are:

The black house ant is one of the most common indoor pest ants in Sydney. It will often build nests in wall voids and roof cavities. Fortunately with the correct choice of ant bait, they are relatively easy to control.

The coastal brown ant (also called big headed ant) is generally an outdoor pest ant. Although it does sometimes come inside (and loves petfood!) it is well known for digging up the dirt under pavers. Although relatively easy to eliminate from a defined area for a short period of time, they tend to build super colonies – nests which cover large areas. This means they will re-invade treated areas after a couple of months and so regular treatments are often required. Although their name suggests they are only found in coastal areas, they are found all across Sydney.

Green-head ants are a common biting ant found in lawns and garden beds across Sydney. They deliver a painful and itchy sting. Professional ant exterminators can eliminate green ant nests in lawns. It may take many months before new nests are built in the lawn.

Funnel ants are only found in certain areas in Sydney – they build their nests underground but only like lawns with specific soil types and specific grasses. However, in areas where they do exist, they can cause major infestations across entire neighbourhoods. Ant exterminators can deliver highly successful treatments to eliminate the nests and provide long term protection. The price of the treatment will depend on the size of the lawn to be treated. However, it is certainly worth it as funnel ant infestations are unsightly, cause damage to equipment, can cause injury (twisted ankles) and devalue house prices.

Ant Pest Control Prices in Sydney

Ant pest control prices will depend on the species of ant and level of infestation. For indoor ant problems the size of the building can also impact the price. Unit prices may start from $180 and houses start from $250.

In the case of outdoor ant treatments or lawn ant treatments, the size of the area to be treated will have a significant impact on the price, especially with funnel ants. When calling for a quote, make sure you have measured the size of your lawn.
