Spray Tips for Termite Control

Anna Berry, Technical Director at Pelsis US, shares her tips on what equipment to use to get the best results in a variety of termite treatment situations.

It’s very easy to get into a routine with termite treatments – just trench or drill and inject. However, it’s worth having a closer look at the construction of the building and any potential issues to ensure the product is applied to create a complete treated zone. There are often some tricky spots or application challenges, but fortunately B&G has a range of spray application equipment that can deal with any situation.

Perimeter treatments

For perimeter treatments, a quality spray gun allows for accurate, high flow rates and leak-free application for trench treatments and soil injections. Digging a trench according to label instructions is best practice, to ensure that the proper amount of termiticide is being applied and that you are avoiding gaps. However, sometimes it is necessary to use soil injection (rodding) in areas where trenching isn’t possible. The SRG Perimeter Spray Gun Model (SRG-6) is an ideal option for these uses and is capable of delivering up to 23 L/min, saving time on application.

Sub-slab injections

When it comes to sub-slab injections, avoiding leaks and spills is important, especially if injecting internally. Avoiding the minor spills when transferring the rod from hole to hole is preferable, certainly if a customer is looking over your shoulder! The Sub-Slab Injector from B&G is the answer in this scenario. Unlike other devices that have a foot pedal to form a seal on the slab, the Sub-Slab Injector has a locking seal from the injector directly to the slab, as well as an inline tip shut-off. Every safety feature is incorporated into this device to prevent drips and leaks. This added safety component helps when back pressure is an issue and provides maximum safety for the user and the customer.

When it comes to sub-slab injection, correct tip choice is key to ensure a complete treated zone is achieved. The Robco 5-in-1 Termite Tool Kit from B&G is a series of tool attachments for use with a spray rig or power sprayer. It includes a soil rodding tool and four precision delivery tips (two sub-slab tips, one straight tip, and one soil tip). This means it can effectively be used as five different tools: a sub-slab injector, a soil injector, a void injector, a pre-treatment/perimeter spray gun, and a long and short rodding tool.

This piece of equipment helps to accurately apply termiticide in places that are difficult to reach using other application methods. For example, interior obstacles such as built-in cabinets, plumbing and drains often affect where a treatment can be performed. In this situation, drilling in front of the cabinets at the recommended intervals and using a 180-degree tip will allow you to overlap your treatment and reach the base of the wall or footing, controlling termites that are tunnelling up the wall voids.

Foam applications

Whilst liquid applications are the norm, in sub-slab areas when there are voids or gaps between the soil and slab, pest managers should consider foaming the void under the slab, so it completely fills the area with a termiticide. Always read the label for application limitations and mixing ratios. Use B&G’s Wood Treatment System (WTS) (pictured above, left) to inject foam below the slab for large applications such as the length of a hallway in an average single family home. The Versafoamer 4000 (pictured above, right) can be used efficiently to treat smaller areas such as bath traps or voids of around 2 sqm, depending on the depth of the void.

Termite Monitoring Solution

Although B&G is known for its spray equipment, its range also includes the TM-1 Termite Monitor – ideal for monitoring termite activity on a property. These low cost units and ease of inspection provide pest managers with a great supplementary termite management tool.
