How to Choose the Best Termite Control in Sydney?

When you are looking to protect your home from termites, you want to find a company you can trust to deliver the best termite control services.

If your friends cannot recommend a termite exterminator, we recommend using our checklist below to help find a quality pest control company.

(Professional Pest Manager does not recommend or endorse any particular termite pest control company.)

Make sure the pest manager has a current pest control license issued by NSW Environment Protection Authority. It is important to make sure it allows them to provide timber pest services. Timber pests includes termites, borers and the fungi that causes timber decay.

Licenses issued before 17 December 2021 were simply called a Pest Management technician license which allowed the holder to carry out general pest and timber pest (termite) work. These licenses are still valid until they expire. However, Pest Management Technician licenses granted after 17 December 2021 no longer allow the holder to carry out timber pest work. To carry our timber pest work, they need to have a Timber Pest Management Technician license, which allows the holder to carry out all timber pest work (termite treatments and inspections) as well as general pest work.

The EPA public register allows you to check the license status of your pest manager.

Licenses and insurance are two separate things. A pest manager may have a license to carry out the work but they may not be insured to carry out the work. Without insurance, if anything goes wrong, you are not protected.

Make sure their insurance covers timbers pest work (termite inspections and termite treatments). The pest control company needs to provide you with a copy of their insurance if requested.

It’s important to choose a termite pest control manager with experience. When you are looking to protect what is probably your most valuable asset – your home – you want make sure you use an experience termite exterminator you can trust.

Certainly you should be looking for a termite professional with at least 2-3 years experience, but recommendations from friends and testimonials from happy clients will provide you with added confidence.

There is a range of useful termite detection equipment used by termite exterminators:

  • Moisture meters are essential for detecting leaks and suspicious areas of moisture (which could be caused by termites.
  • The Termatract termite detector is a common piece of equipment used by termite inspectors and includes a motion detector that can pick up termite movement behind walls.
  • Thermal cameras can also be useful to detect areas of concern behind walls.

Having all the latest equipment doesn’t necessarily make a good termite inspector. The most important piece of equipment is the skill and experience of the termite inspector. They will then use the appropriate equipment when required.

Thermal cameras are a case in point – some thermal cameras are not very good quality and are more of a gimmick, so don’t be swayed by a company that focuses solely on the equipment they use – go for the experienced termite inspector first!

If you haven’t received a recommendation from a friend, checking out their online reviews is the next best thing. Make sure their reviews related to termite inspections or termite treatments.

For termite inspections there are no warranties as such. It is important to read the inspection report as there will undoubtably be exclusions (this is normal). It is important to remember that termite inspections are visible inspections, so they cannot absolutely guarantee your home is free from termites or termite damage. This is why the insurance is essential – if they miss something they should have spotted, you are protected.

For termite treatments, you are protected through a combination of product warranties and the termite company’s insurance.

The treatment warranty will last for the specified period as long as three main conditions are followe:

  • Annual termite inspections must be carried out
  • Any recommendations  to correct any conducive conditions or building faults that may make a termite attack more likely, must be followed
  • Instructions regarding the management of the treatment must be followed

Common termite species in Sydney

The most common type of termites found in Sydney are subterranean termites, which means they predominantly live and nest underground. The three main groups of subterranean termite that attack homes in Sydney are Coptotermes, Schedorhinotermes and Nasutitermes. Occasionally Heterotermes will also cause some minor damage.

Coptotermes termites can cause significant damage. They can develop into very large colonies over over 1 million individuals! There are two main species in Sydney, the main species is Coptotermes acinaciformis, which builds their nests underground or in tree trunks, so are difficult to locate. The second species in Coptotermes lacteus which is mainly in the Southern Highlands, but they make visible mounds on the ground.

Schedorhinotermes termites are quite common and cause a lot of damage. They are quite difficult to control as they develop a number of different, interconnected nests. Even if you kill one nest, it is likely there is another nest nearby to take over.

Nasutitermes termites can cause a lot of damage, but as they also produce obvious mounds, they are generally quite easy to spot. However, they can travel a long way from their nest to a feeding site, so homeowners may not spot the nest, especially if it is nearby bushland.
