TELSTRA BUSINESS AWARDS 2015

The Telstra Business Awards give recognition to those who excel in their field, including pest management.

Nominations are now open for the 23rd Telstra Business Awards. This year’s entrants will be judged on broadened human resources criteria along with business achievements, strategy, customer service, financials, sales and marketing, innovation and social responsibility.

Telstra business group managing director Will Irving said flexible working practices should be just as important to small and medium businesses in attracting and retaining talent as they are for Australia’s largest corporations.

“Staffing and management practices are a critical part of any successful business, no matter how big or small, but they can often go unnoticed and unrewarded,” Mr Irving said.

With entries for the 2015 Awards open from 9 February to 30 March, Mr Irving said innovation, often the driving force for entry into new markets will again be closely scrutinised in judging this year.

Businesses can enter five Awards categories – Start-Up, Micro (see last year’s winner, box below), Small, Medium and Regional.

“Small and medium businesses contribute a significant amount to Australia’s economy and employ almost three quarters of the national workforce,” Mr Irving said.

“These Awards celebrate inspirational achievements for both small and medium businesses and aim to help these brilliant businesses become the best they can be.”

Awards category, nomination and entry information can be found on the Telstra Business Awards website.

2014 – Micro Business Award finalist

Chris Taylor, Forensic Pest Management Services

Pest control had never been just a job for Chris Taylor (pictured above). He often spent his spare time educating himself on how to better meet future challenges at work. A self-starter, he decided to apply his time and effort into building his own business. In 2003 he established Forensic Pest Management Services using the family car with a trailer attached. Word of mouth grew, and today Chris employs five full-time staff members and has a fleet of three vehicles.

All products used are environmentally friendly and non-toxic to ensure the health and safety of staff and their residential, commercial and industry clients. Demand has led to a massive growth in sales this financial year. The company’s specialty, Customised Bird Control Solutions, has led to contract wins across NSW. It’s also become a highly recommended contractor for major government authorities.
