Spinosad: A Smarter Future for Professional Pest Management

Spinout Insecticide is a novel product that uses spinosad as its active ingredient.

In pest management, progress rarely comes from doing more of the same. It comes from doing things better, more precisely, more responsibly, and more in tune with what customers, regulators and the environment are demanding. That’s why Spinout 133 SC Insecticide with Natural Spinosad marks a significant moment for the Australian pest industry.

Approved on December 19, 2025 and now available in a 500 mL easy measure chamber pack through local distributors, Spinout is the latest addition to Sundew Solutions’ growing ecowise portfolio. But it’s also something more: a signal that professional pest managers no longer need to choose between performance and responsibility.

“Ecowise matters because expectations have changed,” said David Priddy, CEO of Sundew Solutions. “Today’s clients want effective pest control, but they also want confidence – confidence that products are being used thoughtfully, that applications are targeted, and that the chemistry aligns with modern environmental and safety standards.”

That shift in expectation is exactly why Sundew has committed to developing its ecowise range. The company’s philosophy is to deliver professional-grade performance while limiting unnecessary chemical loading in sensitive environments.

Sundew was the first company to introduce spinosad into the Australian professional pest management market. Spinosad is derived from a naturally occurring soil bacterium, Saccharopolyspora spinosa. From this biological origin comes a molecule with a very different profile to conventional synthetic insecticides.

“Spinosad represents what we believe modern pest control should look like,” explained Mr Priddy.

“It’s a naturally derived active with a unique mode of action that delivers real-world performance without the cross-resistance challenges and toxicological concerns of many older chemistry groups.”

Spinosad acts on insects through a distinct mode of action, targeting nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and GABA receptor sites in the insect nervous system. This leads to excitation, paralysis and death, while avoiding the broad-spectrum neurotoxicity associated with many traditional insecticides. For pest management professionals, this means reliable control of ants, cockroaches and flies, paired with a chemistry profile that fits comfortably into sensitive use situations.

Equally important is spinosad’s exceptional safety profile; it has an oral LD50 that places it among the lowest-toxicity insecticides available. It is non-repellent, allowing insects to behave normally and come into contact with treated surfaces, and it poses minimal risk to people, pets and the environment when used according to label directions.

“That combination, non-repellent performance and low toxicity, is incredibly powerful for professionals,” said Mr Priddy. “It gives pest managers confidence when working in occupied buildings, food environments and public spaces.”

Spinout 133 SC Insecticide brings these advantages together in a super concentrated 133 g/L spinosad suspension concentrate. With a low use rate of just 6 mL per litre of water, Spinout allows effective control using very small quantities of active ingredient, an approach that aligns directly with ecowise principles.

Crucially, Spinout is not intended to be viewed through the same lens as traditional long-term residual treatments built around synthetic pyrethroid chemistry. Instead, it is best understood as a targeted, controlled application tool ideal for direct treatment of active cockroach populations in cracks and crevices, or focused ant treatments where activity is observed.

“Our thinking is simple,” said Mr Priddy. “Apply chemistry where it’s needed, when it’s needed, and only in the amount required. That’s what today’s eco-conscious customers expect, and it’s what responsible pest management looks like.”

Spinout is currently approved for ants, cockroaches and houseflies across an extensive range of use situations. These include domestic, commercial, industrial and public buildings and facilities such as food processing establishments, meatworks (non-product areas), shops, factories, farm buildings, hospitality venues, and public transport. It is also approved for use in poultry, beef, dairy and horse premises.

For houseflies, Spinout offers additional versatility. It can be applied as a surface spray or used as a bait treatment when mixed with 10 g of sugar per litre of water, demonstrating how spinosad chemistry can be adapted to insect behaviour rather than forcing behaviour to adapt to chemistry.

Spinout also integrates with Spinogel Roach with Natural Spinosad, giving pest managers a complementary solution for cockroach control. Spinout is ideally suited for direct application to active infestations, while Spinogel Roach delivers ongoing residual control through highly palatable baiting.

Looking ahead, Sundew will continue to drive products forward. “We’re currently doing some very exciting research and development to expand the Spinout label to include additional pest species,” added Mr Priddy. “That work is driven by science, field validation and real-world professional needs.”
