In this feature, Agserv business consultant Andy Knox invites a pest control professional to talk about their favourite product. Here, he asks pest manager David Hallows, “What is your favourite product and why?”
Since its inception in 2013, Gremlin Pest & Weed Control has grown into a prominent, family-run operation based in Perth. Founded by David Hallows after obtaining his WA pest control licence, the business began as a solo venture. Over time, Mr Hallows was joined by his son Matt and his wife Cheyne (pictured above) both of whom are now qualified pest managers. Today, the company employs two additional technicians and operates a fleet of four trucks, servicing the Perth metro area and regions up to three or four hours from the Perth CBD.
Initially focused on residential pest management, Gremlin Pest & Weed Control quickly expanded into the commercial sector, now balancing its client base with 60% residential and 40% commercial services.
From the early days, Biflex Ultra Lo-Odour Termiticide & Insecticide from FMC has been the cornerstone of their pest control solutions. Mr Hallows experimented with various insecticides before settling on Biflex Ultra for its superior performance. He appreciates its long-lasting residual effect and low odour, a combination not always found in other bifenthrin formulations.
“It is my go-to product for spiders,” Mr Hallows says. “Particularly in high-pressure areas. I also use it in routine maintenance treatments for general pests and for termite management and prevention where no prior termite activity has been identified.” Biflex Ultra’s dual action, which both kills and repels subterranean termites, means it can be used for both pre-construction and post-construction termite control.
Biflex Ultra is renowned for its powerful knockdown and residual properties, effectively reducing populations of ants, cockroaches, fleas, flies, mosquitoes, spiders, ticks, and wasps. Its efficacy is maintained through direct contact and residual action as pests come into contact with treated surfaces.
Despite his preference for Biflex Ultra, Mr Hallows acknowledges that it isn’t suitable for every situation. For severe black ant infestations, previous termite activity, and heavy cockroach infestations, Gremlin Pest & Weed Control opts for fipronil-based insecticides.
The application methods at Gremlin Pest & Weed Control are tailored to job size. Technicians use 15 L electric knapsack sprayers for smaller tasks, while larger jobs and termite treatments are handled with bulk tanks. Initially using standard 250 L tanks, Mr Hallows has since developed customized 400 L tanks to fit their trucks better.
Mr Hallows is a loyal customer of Richard Douglas of Agserv, who is supported by Paddy Boonnak at the Perth branch. Since the business began, Mr Hallows has always bought his supplies from Mr Douglas, at various companies and locations over the years. “Customer service from Richard and Paddy at Agserv Perth is second to none,” he said. “They are always friendly and supportive, helping to explain new products and technologies. They are even prepared to come out into the field with us on particularly tricky jobs.”
