BED, BUG AND BEYOND

Mattress protectors offer customers peace of mind that their bedding is safeguarded against bed bugs.

Bed bugs. These nocturnal parasites are located all over the world and although they are not dangerous, their presence can be distressing and their bites highly irritating. Small in size with an oval body, these blood-sucking wingless insects are attracted to warmth, and generally try to remain within close proximity of their host.

Generally preferring human blood, they will also settle for other mammals if necessary. They are most active at night and may bite on any exposed areas of skin while the individual is sleeping. Commonly located in the mattress, bed bugs can live in furniture cracks and in any type of textile. You may find them in the following areas:

  • Bedding such as blankets and sheets
  • Between cracks in wooden floors
  • Wall cracks
  • Carpet
  • In the seams and cracks in furniture.

Bed bugs pierce the skin, injecting saliva containing anaesthetic and anticoagulants, which causes an allergic reaction. This allergic reaction is displayed on skin as itchy, red welts. They tend to feed anywhere from 5-10 days but can survive without feeding for several months.

Early indication that you may have bed bugs in your home is the presence of the bites on yourself or other family members. If this occurs, it is important to perform a thorough inspection in the common hiding spots. Things to look out for are the following:

  • The bugs themselves. Though due to their size, they may be a challenge to find
  • Bloodstains from crushed bugs on the mattress or sheet
  • Rusty or dark spots of bug excrement on the mattress, bedding or the walls.
