Rodent Control West Auckland

West Auckland seem to have a high number of rat and mice infestations. In recent years there have been reports of “cat-sized” rats in some suburbs, as well as rat and mice problems in supermarkets. Although rodents are a problem across Auckland, there do seem to be areas in West Auckland with high rodent populations. Typically these high rodent numbers are associated with plentiful food – areas around refuse, areas of natural sources of food (plants) or areas where chickens are kept. There are a number of areas in West Auckland which back onto bush which not only provide idea nesting areas for rodents, but it also makes them far more difficult to control.

How to Choose the Best Rodent Pest Control in Auckland?

To eliminate a rodent infestation completely and safely, it is necessary to have expert knowledge of rodent identification, behaviour and control techniques. This is because the different rodent species have very different behaviours and require different rodent control programs. It’s also important to use the right products and safety precautions to avoid accidental poisoning of children, pets and native wildlife.

Rodent exterminators will use a range of products to eliminate rats and mice, including baits and traps. From a safety point of view, they will generally use lockable bait stations to avoid unintended contact with the bait or trap.

Make sure the pest manager has the appropriate training. There isn’t a license per se, but they should have an appropriate certificate to show they have completed the appropriate training.

There are three training certificates which comply with requirements:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Pest Operations (Level 3, Urban Pest Control) – the current training qualification
  • National Certificate in Urban Pest Management (Level 2) – the previous training qualification
  • Three core units from the Australian Pest Management Qualification – CPP30911 Certificate III in Pest Management

Many pest managers are also members of the industry organisation PMANZ (Pest Management Association of New Zealand). To become members there are additional criteria and so using a PMANZ member can provide additional protection over using a non-member.

Qualifications and insurance are two separate things. A pest manager may have the qualifications to carry out the work but they may not be insured to carry out the work. Without insurance, if anything goes wrong, you are not protected.

Make sure their insurance covers pest work. The pest control company needs to provide you with a copy of their insurance if requested.

If you haven’t received a recommendation from a friend, checking out their online reviews is the next best thing.

In residential situations, rodent pest control companies will guarantee elimination of rodent infestations, unless there is unusual rodent pressure from surrounding areas. For commercial situations, regular rodent control servicing is required to keep the premises rodent free.

One of the reasons it is difficult to keep buildings rodent free is that rodents are very clever at finding an entry point (or making one through gnawing!). Carrying out rodent proofing will make it a lot more difficult for rodents to enter the property. Warranties will often depend on rodent proofing recommendations being carried out. Some pest control companies will provide these rodent proofing services.

Warranties will also depend on carrying out any recommended hygiene measures, to make the property less attractive to rodents.

Common types of rodent in Auckland

In Auckland, the main pest rodents species are the roof rat and the house mouse. Occasionally, the Norway rat will also be present.

There are three main types of rodents found in Auckland:

The roof rat (or black rat), Rattus rattus,  is the most common rat species in Auckland. It has a long tail (compared with its body and  bigger ears than the Norway rat). However, the big difference to the Norway rat, as its names suggests is in its behaviour – it tends to nest and live above ground level. In buildings, it will often nest in roof areas.

In New Zealand there is the national Predator Free 2050 program, which aims to have the main pest predators eliminated from New Zealand by 2050. This includes stoats, possums and roof rats (ship rats).

The Pest Free Auckland activities support these Predator Free 2050 objectives.

The Norway rat (sewer rat or brown rat), Rattus norvegicus,  is the largest pest rat species in Auckland. Also called the brown rat or sewer rat, it generally lives and nests at ground level. It will often dig burrows outside.

The house mouse, Mus musculus, is a common pest rodent in Sydney. It loves to build its nests inside buildings – inside wall cavities, behind cupboards, in boxes and even inside furniture. Mice are relatively easy to control.

Rodent Pest Control Prices in Auckland

Rodent pest control prices generally depend on the level of infestation and the species of rodent present. These factors influence how many visits may be required to eliminate the infestation.

For a small mouse infestation at a residential property, this can sometimes be dealt with in a single visit. Rat problems tend to involve more than one visit as they take time to accept baits and they take longer to control. Large infestations may take several visits and an increase amount of rodent bait. Rodent pest control prices start at around $250 for “standard” rodent problems at a normal sizes house, increasing  to $1000 or more for major infestations at large properties.

Commercial rodent control generally requires a regular service program.
