The latest report on mouse activity for 2025.
Farmers and rodenticide manufacturers like to keep a close eye on mouse numbers. Not only is it important for individual farmers to make sure numbers are kept in check on their property to avoid crop damage, but rodenticide manufacturers need to be aware of any potential surges in populations around the country or even a mouse plague, to ensure enough rodent bait is on hand.
At the moment, mouse numbers are generally low across the country and a mouse plague is not expected this autumn and winter.
The latest CSIRO activity report (November 2024) indicates low mouse numbers across the country with the exception of the Darling Downs in Queensland where there is moderate, albeit patchy, mouse activity. This increases the chances of a mouse plague in autumn/winter, although it is still only viewed as a low to moderate possibility.
The mouse forecast is focused on rural areas so is of particular importance to rural-based pest managers. Rodent numbers in urban areas are influenced by a number of different factors. However, if a mouse plague develops in the country areas, it will impact rodent bait supply across the country.
CSIRO produces mouse activity updates three times a year, which can easily be accessed in a number of locations including the MouseAlert website.
