The main species of brown ants are Argentine ants and the coastal brown ant and the main species of black ants are tthe black house ant and white-footed ant. Some ants nest outside the home and enter the home looking for food and water, others actually nest in the house, typically in the roof void or wall cavities. 

Ants can be annoying getting into food and in major infestations they can make enjoying the outdoor areas impossible. They can also cause electrical problems and even house fires, when they get into plug sockets and chew electrical wiring.

How to Choose the Best Ant Pest Control Company in Auckland?

Ant control needs a good knowledge of ant behaviour and access to a professional range of ant control products. Typically, ant treatments involve more than just a spray, often including ant baits as well. Ask them how long it will take to gain control and whether re-treatments will be necessary. Baits typically take at least a few days to eliminate a colony and for invasive ant species, any treatment will only provide relief for a limited time before they re-invade from surrounding areas. So if you are in an ant infested neighbourhood, regular treatments may be necessary. Make sure they carry out an inspection to try and locate the nest and entry points into the building.

Make sure the pest manager has the appropriate training. There isn’t a license per se, but they should have an appropriate certificate to show they have completed the appropriate training.

There are three training certificates which comply with requirements:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Pest Operations (Level 3, Urban Pest Control) – the current training qualification
  • National Certificate in Urban Pest Management (Level 2) – the previous training qualification
  • Three core units from the Australian Pest Management Qualification – CPP30911 Certificate III in Pest Management

Many pest managers are also members of the industry organisation PMANZ (Pest Management Association of New Zealand). To become members there are additional criteria and so using a PMANZ member can provide additional protection over using a non-member. 

Qualifications and insurance are two separate things. A pest manager may have the qualifications to carry out the work but they may not be insured to carry out the work. Without insurance, if anything goes wrong, you are not protected. 

Make sure their insurance covers pest work. The pest control company needs to provide you with a copy of their insurance if requested.

So you can compare the ant treatments offered by different companies, ask the pest manager what they will do as part of the treatment:

  • Are the going to spray the outside of the home?
  • Will they spray the inside of the home?
  • Will they treat roof voids and sub-floors?
  • Will they use ant baits?

Also ask how long it will take and how long the treatment will last?

The answer to the above is likely to vary depending on the species present and level of infestation. This may also impact if a second visit is required to gain control and indeed whether a regular treatment program may be required.

If the ant nest is inside the building, ant exterminators will guarantee elimination. They should also provide a warranty for how long the ants will be prevented from entering the building.

The ability to offer a warranty regarding the level of control achieved outdoors and duration of protection will depend very much on the species and level of infestation in the neighbourhood.

Common types of ants in Auckland

In Auckland, the four main species of spider that are found in homes and gardens are the Argentine ant, coastal brown ant, black house ant and white-footed ant.

Argentine ants are one of the worst invasive ants and can form super colonies that can take over whole neighbourhoods. Typically they nest outside in garden beds close to the soil surface. Their numbers in summer and early Autumn can make outdoor areas unliveable. They eat a wide range of food and change their preferences through the year – sometimes they will come in looking for sugary foods and sometimes for protein. Argentine ant problems often require both sprays and baits to gain control (and a lot of them!).

The coastal brown ant, also called the big headed ant is mainly an outdoor problem. They often building their nests under paths and pavers, digging up the dirt. They will come inside looking for foods high in protein and fat. Baits can work well to eliminate nests and sprays can be effective to exclude them from an area. However, they are one of the invasive ants that can form super colonies and so will eventually re-invade from surrounding areas. 

Black house ants are relatively easy to control with the correct bait. They form a single nest with a single queen and so baits work very well to eliminate the colony – professional sugar based baits work best.

Although white footed ants are black ant that looks very similar to the black house ant, they are a lot more difficult to control. This is a situation where correct identification is essential. White footed house ants can build colonies of many nests with multiple queens. This can be a challenge when they nest inside buildings. Often a combination of sprays and baits are required and trying to locate all nests is imported.
