{"id":6609,"date":"2015-01-01T16:01:29","date_gmt":"2015-01-01T06:01:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ppmmagazine.com.au\/?p=6609"},"modified":"2022-10-13T06:54:18","modified_gmt":"2022-10-12T20:54:18","slug":"eradication-of-red-imported-fire-ant-underway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/professionalpestmanager.com\/nz\/pest-control-ants\/eradication-of-red-imported-fire-ant-underway\/","title":{"rendered":"ERADICATION OF RED IMPORTED FIRE ANT UNDERWAY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Australian authorities are stepping up resources to combat an incursion of red imported fire ant (RIFA).\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\"hr-thick\"><\/div>\n<p>On 5 December, NSW Minister\u00a0for Primary Industries, <strong>Katrina Hodgkinson,<\/strong> confirmed response efforts at Port Botany had commenced following a detection of highly aggressive and invasive red imported fire ants at a port facility.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Hodgkinson said three elite odour detection dogs had been brought down from Queensland to assist with eradication efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBaiting of the exotic pest is now well underway on the quarantined site and will be followed by pesticide treatment in coming days,\u201d Ms Hodgkinson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile this outbreak \u2013 the first in NSW \u2013 is serious, we have an experienced team of highly trained staff working to ensure eradication is successful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA team of emergency response experts, including regulatory officers, biosecurity officers and entomologists are at the site looking for nests, setting traps and commencing eradication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe National Fire Ant Program is assisting the NSW response and has also provided three of their elite odour detection dogs from Queensland that have been trained specifically to sniff out the red imported fire ant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGenetic testing undertaken by Queensland DAFF has confirmed the ant is indeed the red imported fire ant, and is not related to any of the incursions in Queensland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDNA testing has confirmed that the ants originated in Argentina and further investigations into how the pest travelled to NSW are being conducted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRed imported fire ant has not\u00a0been detected previously in NSW and investigations are underway to determine their origin and how long the ants may have been here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Hodgkinson said the detection site has been quarantined and the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) is working closely with port operators, who are cooperating fully with authorities.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6612\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6612\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6612\" src=\"https:\/\/professionalpestmanager.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/RIFA-Fire-Ant-on-pin-head-copy-low-res-300x242.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/professionalpestmanager.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/RIFA-Fire-Ant-on-pin-head-copy-low-res-300x242.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/professionalpestmanager.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/RIFA-Fire-Ant-on-pin-head-copy-low-res-248x200.jpeg 248w, https:\/\/professionalpestmanager.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/RIFA-Fire-Ant-on-pin-head-copy-low-res-236x190.jpeg 236w, https:\/\/professionalpestmanager.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/RIFA-Fire-Ant-on-pin-head-copy-low-res-130x105.jpeg 130w, https:\/\/professionalpestmanager.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/RIFA-Fire-Ant-on-pin-head-copy-low-res.jpeg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6612\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Red imported fire ants are reddish brown and from 2-6mm in length (photo credit: NSW Department of Primary Industries)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhile the detection currently appears to be localised to the area, we are conducting extensive surveillance in a much larger area to make sure the pests haven\u2019t spread,\u201d Ms Hodgkinson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRed imported fire ants are a nasty pest; able to inflict painful stings\u00a0on people, pets and livestock, and eradication efforts in Queensland have already cost $281 million since 2001.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve engaged an expert team from the National Program in Queensland, who are currently dealing with this pest in Yarwun (Gladstone) and in South-East Queensland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Red imported fire ants pose a significant social, economic and environmental threat through attacking animals and invading food and water sources.<\/p>\n<p>The fire ants are reddish-brown in colour and from 2-6mm in length.
