{"id":40103,"date":"2025-06-01T08:16:19","date_gmt":"2025-05-31T22:16:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/professionalpestmanager.com\/?p=69331"},"modified":"2025-07-24T19:06:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-24T09:06:15","slug":"nz-school-students-trapping-rats-to-save-kiwis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/professionalpestmanager.com\/nz\/rodent-control\/nz-school-students-trapping-rats-to-save-kiwis\/","title":{"rendered":"NZ School Students Trapping Rats to Save Kiwis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><em>In one New Zealand school, students are getting in on the task of rodent management.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><div class=\"hr-thick\"><\/div><\/p>\n<p>Students at a small, semi-rural school near Wellington have been tasked with trapping rats at school \u2013 a project the children are keen to get involved with.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the Capital Kiwi Project, 200 native kiwi birds are now living in Wellington\u2019s eastern hills and M\u0101kara Model School is helping protect them from rodents by setting and checking traps daily.<\/p>\n<p>Students said they checked the traps each morning, which are baited with peanut butter and placed inside school buildings and around the school grounds. Disposal of the dead rodents is no problem \u2013 they get fed to the eels in the nearby stream.<\/p>\n<p>One 12-year-old student said checking and resetting the traps was \u201cpretty fun\u201d, until there was a live rat to contend with. For any live rats that are found, the solution was to finish the job with a rock.<\/p>\n<p>The school\u2019s principle said students were learning about the circle of life, \u201cacquiring skills they probably wouldn\u2019t be learning at a school in the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The school has been trapping rats for more than a decade, both to protect the area\u2019s biodiversity and to keep rodents out of the classrooms.
