However, it is believed that these nests arrived in imported timber.\u00a0<\/p><p>Although alate flights (mating flights) have been observed from these nests in New Zealand, there is no evidence that these have resulted in the formation of new nests, and therefore these termites are not considered established in New Zealand.\u00a0<\/p><p>Coptotermes are considered a sub-tropical species and so only really have the potential to establish on the North Island and even then, it would be at the limit of their range.<\/p><p>However, with colonies capable of growing to contain over 1 million individuals, they can cause significant damage and Biosecurity New Zealand is very vigilant in their monitoring efforts.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-892c21 closed-accordion elementor-widget elementor-widget-accordion\" data-id=\"892c21\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"accordion.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 id=\"elementor-tab-title-8981\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"1\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-8981\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-right\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">Common species:<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-8981\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"1\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-8981\"><div>In Australia the common species are:<\/div><ul><li><em>Coptotermes acinaciformis<\/em><\/li><li><em>Coptotermes frenchi<\/em><\/li><li><em>Coptotermes acinaciformis raffrayi<\/em><\/li><li><em>Coptotermes lacteus<\/em><\/li><\/ul><p>Globally, the two species of concern are <em>Coptotermes gestroi<\/em> and<em> Coptotermes formosanus<\/em>. If a nest is found, treating with a liquid termiticide is useful in lessening the overall termite pressure on a property<\/li><li>Stage 2 treatment (preventative) \u2013 soil applied liquids and a baiting monitoring program are both suitable options<\/li><\/ul><p><em>C. frenchi<\/em>\u00a0tend to be more timid than\u00a0<em>C. acinaciformis<\/em>.
