GREENZONE’S GRAND FINAL CONNECTION

The team at Greenzone are proud of rising AFL star Jake Bowey, the most recent Bowey family member to carve out a career in professional sports.

For Brett Bowey, general manager of Greenzone, Saturday September 25th marked a big moment for his family. After only a handful of appearances for his new club the Melbourne Demons, Mr Bowey’s son Jake Bowey played in the AFL Grand Final.

The 19-year-old kept his composure under pressure, helping take his team to victory with a 140-66 win over the Western Bulldogs. It was a remarkable finish to the season for Jake who finished the 2021 season as a premiership player after just 12 months in the AFL league.

Along with his precise kicking skills, football knowledge and on-field composure, proud father Mr Bowey believes Jake’s “super competitive” nature is what has helped catapult him to the big time.

“He was always tiny,” his mother Dee Bowey added. “But he was good. He knew no fear and always played up [an age group] and could always find space once he had the football.”

Brett Bowey is no stranger to the field himself, having played for St Kilda throughout the late 80s and early 90s. The Boweys are very much a footie family, with daughter Hannah Bowey also being a skilled footballer, playing for Collingwood in the VFLW this season.

“Dad was a pretty big factor for me playing AFL,” said Jake. “I always wanted to follow in his footsteps.” For now, Jake is stationed in the Melbourne Demons’ backline, cementing his position as a rising star in the AFL.
