DRUMMUSTER AND CHEMCLEAR FULFIL INDUSTRY QA NEEDS

The drumMUSTER and ChemClear programs continue to make it easy for users of pesticides to meet their quality assurance obligations.

For the last 16 years, thousands of chemical users have relied on drumMUSTER to regularly dispose of their empty chemical containers. During this time, the program has recycled over 26.7 million drums received from the pest, agricultural, turf industries, which equates to around 32 tonnes of materials diverted from Australian landfills.

The program continues to be the most successful plastic recycling program in Australia and is used as a benchmark for similar stewardship programs developing around the world.

In addition to drumMUSTER, ChemClear provides Australian agvet chemical users with a collection and disposal pathway for their unwanted chemicals. Since entering the agricultural waste sector in 2003, the ChemClear program has collected more than 502 tonnes of unwanted chemicals, from thousands of waste holders.

Increasingly, consumers throughout Australia and around the world are demanding that all produce they purchase comes from quality producers who meet all the necessary food and health standards.

The drumMUSTER and ChemClear programs are ideally set up to meet chemical user requirements for quality assurance (QA) programs such as Pestcert. By utilising these services, chemical users in the pest industry are provided with documentation that demonstrates they are meeting their responsibilities for waste management of chemicals and used containers.

“Responsible chemical waste management is now an essential element of most quality assurance programs, drumMUSTER and ChemClear are trying to make it as easy as possible for businesses and farmers to tick those boxes.

“Our programs have been structured to support businesses meeting their QA responsibilities – all eligible containers display the drumMUSTER logo and users of chemicals should always read the label and obtain the Safety Data Sheet for referencing,” said national program manager, Lisa Nixon.

But drumMUSTER and ChemClear are more than just a tick in the box for QA. They represent a firm commitment from local businesses to doing the right thing for the safety and reputation of their customers, their community and their staff.

Under the drumMUSTER program, users are required to make sure containers are empty, rinsed clean and dried before returning them to a collection site (such as the one in Mitchell, ACT, pictured above). Once collected, the containers are shredded and transformed into practical items such as plastic cable covers, wheelie bins, road signs and bollards.

Chemicals collected are used as an alternative fuel source in the manufacturing of cement. Most of the material is destroyed in kilns, which reach temperatures in excess of 1800 degrees.
